The Dress at The Windsor

An Essence Theatre Productions performance at the Victorian Gilded Ball

28 March 2026 – The Hotel Windsor, Melbourne

Essence Theatre Productions is proud to present The Dress as part of the Victorian Gilded Ball, an immersive masquerade evening held within the historic Windsor Hotel. Written by Alaine Beek, The Dress opens the evening with a theatrical performance set in pre-Federation Melbourne.

Set in 1890s Melbourne, The Dress follows the unlikely alliance between a widowed former socialite and her devoted dressmaker as they navigate loss, aging and ambition. As old certainties fade and modernity looms, the two dare to reclaim visibility, purpose, and joy through the creation of a gown destined for a masquerade ball.

Why this performance is special?

Presenting The Dress at the Victorian Gilded Ball allows Essence Theatre Productions to place this intimate, character-driven work within a setting that echoes its world of elegance, transition and theatrical spectacle. Performed as the evening's opening, the production acts as a bridge between story and experience, inviting audiences to step fully into another time.
