Essence Theatre Productions is an independent, not‑for‑profit theatre company founded by playwright and theatre‑maker Alaine Beek.
From immersive, long‑running works to new contemporary plays, Essence exists to tell real Australian stories, written from lived research, grounded in place, and brought to life through performance.
At the heart of Essence is Alaine’s creative practice. She writes the plays audiences experience under the Essence banner and is often closely involved in their development as producer, director and performer.

The plays presented by Essence are developed through collaborative processes with artists, designers and communities.
This approach has shaped a distinctive body of work — from immersive theatre set within heritage sites, to contemporary plays exploring identity, life threatening diagnosis, justice, ageing and belonging — each rooted in careful research and genuine human connection.
Theatre grounded in place and community
Based in Melbourne’s west, Essence Theatre Productions is closely connected to the places where its work is created and performed, particularly Werribee Park and the wider Wyndham region.
Essence’s work celebrates local history and culture while engaging with broader social themes, often collaborating with diverse communities to ensure stories are told with integrity, respect and authenticity.
Making the arts accessible
