WOMPA Development Program 2026

A six‑week, hands‑on program for emerging playwrights

Build an idea. Shape a script. Hear it come to life.

August – September 2026 | Werribee

About the program

Following the success of WOMPA over the past three years, Essence Theatre Productions is launching a new development program designed to support writers and creatives in bringing their stories to the stage.

This six‑week program focuses on taking an idea from concept to a working script in a supportive, collaborative environment guided by playwright and director Alaine Beek.

The program also builds towards the next stage of WOMPA, a larger festival event, where a one‑act play competition will form part of this event.

What you’ll gain

Across the program, you’ll:

  • Develop an original idea or expand an existing script

  • Explore structure, character and storytelling for theatre

  • Workshop your writing alongside other creatives

  • Hear your work brought to life by actors

  • Leave with a working draft and a clear sense of next steps.

Whether you’re starting from scratch or building on an existing concept, this is a space to create, test and refine your work.

Who is it for?

This program is open to:

  • Anyone with an idea, draft full script or scene they’d like to develop

  • Writers curious about playwriting but unsure where to begin or where to go next

  • Creatives looking to connect, collaborate and be inspired.

No prior experience is required, just curiosity and a willingness to have a go.
